Oi Skall Mates is a third wave ska band from Tokyo. I have a special fondness for their nutty sound and together with Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, this group represented Japanese ska for me.
The band started playing in 1996 and recorded some very good albums, especially 12-Mates Skall Nighter Woo and Luvin‘ Side New Stomper, which I really enjoyed.
When I tried to contact the band around 2005 to ask if they would do an interview with me, I got a brilliant answer along the lines of: „No, we won’t. It’s nothing personal, we’re just really lazy.“, which I of course fully respected, although I was sorry that I wouldn’t learn more about this band.
The band has now embarked on a 30th anniversary tour and announced that they are releasing a new album after ten years. It will be in Japanese only, mixing influences from ska, reggae, punk, new wave and J-pop. The album will be released on May 27th.
