Urban Glory from New York describe their sound as pubcore. Their music brings back memories of long nights in smoky, all-night pool halls, the cheapest beer in town and the almost absolute certainty that some kind of violence is going to kick off within a few hours, even if I have to be the one to get things started again.
When their five-track EP came out at the end of August, I completely missed it. Luckily, their October single didn’t slip past me, so now I’ve been spinning both releases on repeat for what must be the tenth time. And I’m still loving it.
The fact that these guys know what they’re doing is backed up by their involvement in bands like NY Hounds, Hank Wood and the Hammerheads, Who Pays?, Subversive Rite, The Drunks, Vanity and Lions Cage. But this isn’t just about dropping a list of familiar names. Urban Glory have a fucking captivating atmosphere that pulls you in and refuses to let go.
Call it bovver rock, proto-punk, street rock’n’roll or pubcore. It doesn’t really matter. This is high-octane music for urban street rebels, the kind that won’t let anyone with their heart in the right place (and a knuckle-duster in their back pocket) sit still. The perfect soundtrack for calling up the old crew and heading out to cause a little trouble. Let’s see how things turn out this time…
