Another batch of fresh punk blood is coming out of New Zealand. Brain Squash from Tauranga have released their debut Demo EP, putting this brand-new band firmly on the radar.

Brain Squash operate somewhere between punk and hardcore, and judging by reports from their first live shows, they are definitely not the kind of band that wants to stand in the back and wait for someone to notice them. In June, for example, they played a show in Tauranga alongside local veterans Stunt Clown, where they were introduced as a completely new band.

Demo EP is their first recorded material and showcases the raw sound of a band that is clearly closer to basement DIY punk than polished production. You only get to make your first recording once, and it can give you an idea of where a band might be heading – and this is certainly not a bad start.

Brain Squash are still at the very beginning, but their first steps look promising. The New Zealand punk scene has never been short of interesting bands, and Brain Squash fit into that story pretty damn well.

Remember the name Brain Squash – this could be the beginning of something interesting.
