Better Late Than Never: Loose Lips Deliver a Power Pop Gem with Love You

Every now and then, something good slips under the radar, and the only thing left to do is circle back to it, even if it’s been out for a while. That’s exactly the case with Love You, the 7″ from Loose Lips, a Melbourne, Australia-based trio released on Drunken Sailor Records. This power pop record definitely deserves some attention, and it would be a shame to let it disappear into the pile of releases we somehow missed the first time around.

Loose Lips I

Loose Lips take the best bits of classic ’60s pop, scrappy garage rock and straight-up punk, mixing infectious melodies with crunchy guitars and hooks that stick around long after the record stops spinning. With influences ranging from girl-group legends like The Shirelles and The Shangri-Las to garage rockers The Standells and punk trailblazers the New York Dolls, they have a pretty solid recipe on their hands. Across its four tracks, Love You shows just how well that combination works when sweet pop melodies meet a rougher, louder edge. If this one passed you by too, it’s time to make up for it. Catchy power pop, a proper seven-inch and another reminder that the good stuff is always worth digging up, even when you’re a little late to the party.
