American films have always been popular in Jamaica, but few film genres have been as popular as the spaghetti western. The love for this genre was often reflected in the titles, names of performers and lyrics of songs. Everyone knows the rendition of “The Guns of Navarone” by The Skatalites or Lee Perry’s albums “Clint Eastwood”, “The Good, The Bad And The Upsetters” and “Return Of Django”. However, the love for this genre was also breathed by artists and producers such as Derrick Harriott, Clancy Eccles and of course Jimmy Cliff’s film “The Harder They Come”. The peak of this worship occurred in the period 1969-1972, which was also the heyday of the so-called boss reggae. The Upsessions also made their mark in this genre.
The Upsessions formed in 2005 and have since released five studio albums, the latest of which is ten years old. On this album they collaborated with none other than reggae legend Monty Neysmith: co-founder and songwriter of Symarip, The Pyramids and Seven Letters. His career dates back to the days of Blue Beat Records and Trojan Records, and his songs such as “Skinhead Moonstomp” and “Skinhead Girl” are known all over the world and have been covered by Bad Manners, Judge Dread and The Specials, among others.
Together, The Upsessions and Monty Neysmith recorded 13 brand new songs. The album “Sheriff Double Gun” is a tribute to Jamaica’s love of spaghetti westerns. In support of the album, The Upsessions will tour throughout Europe and the UK, including a tour with The Pioneers.
Special attention is paid to the design of the cover. It is hand-painted by Dutch artist Willem Bergisch. In the exact style of old westerns and comics, definitely a real work of art!
