The A-100s: Too Rad To Be Sad – Summer Reggae Therapy from Punk Veterans

I don’t know about you, but the first days of summer are starting to hit our streets. If you’re looking for a soundtrack for this season that offers a few more thought-provoking layers than your average ska-punk singalong, this might be exactly what you’re after. Born under the wings of the legendary Pirates Press Records, The A-100s bring back authentic Jamaican rhythms laced with Mexican accordion and pure street cred.

The band is fronted by two underground titans who need no introduction: Matt Hensley—skateboarding icon and Flogging Molly’s accordion player—and Sean Wheeler: „Diamond Sean,“ the unmistakable voice of the legendary Throw Rag.

That fresh single and video I’m talking about is „Too Rad To Be Sad.“ It’s more than just a song; it’s a message to anyone battling their own demons or just going through a rough patch.

The music video is mandatory viewing for anyone who grew up on H-Street VHS tapes. It’s packed with archival footage from classic skate videos, vintage and new photos, shots of scooters cruising by, and the band just doing their thing. It might sound like a random mix, but it radiates such a positive energy that you’ll just want to be there with them. Contributing to the visual side is none other than Grant Brittain—the man who captured the most iconic moments in skateboarding history.

This whole journey is leading up to their debut album titled „Rude and Lovely,“ dropping on July 10th. With Roger Rivas (of The Aggrolites) behind the board at Rivas Studios, you’re guaranteed that authentic „dirty reggae“ vinyl sound.

This isn’t just a studio project between two old pals. An incredible cast of musicians from bands like Mariachi El Bronx, Mad Caddies, and Spy Kids joined the sessions. The result is a blend of classic ska, reggae, and „conjunto“ accordion that will smash any bad mood. It’s pure energy from veterans who still have plenty to say.

As the title says: You’re too rad to be sad.
