Texas-based Bullshit Detector are back with a new record. What they said when they released their previous single Northern Lights — that the new album was almost finished — turned out to be true. Built for War was released on September 11 and features eight tracks in which the band continues to develop their rather unusual dark mix of Oi!, punk, post-punk, goth and death rock.
Bullshit Detector from San Antonio have built a reputation over the past few years as a band with an original sound and their own way of delivering music that is both dark and hard-hitting. They are definitely not afraid to experiment and surprise. The band themselves describe their sound as “thugwave.” Dark guitars, a gloomy atmosphere and lyrics dealing with violence, death, alienation and personal demons give their music a character of its own. It is genuinely refreshing to hear a band that is willing to step outside the usual paths.
Built for War runs for just over twenty-one minutes and is an intense and dark ride from beginning to end. There is not much point in describing the individual songs — the album works best as a whole.
If you like Oi! and punk that is not afraid to explore the darker side of post-punk, death rock and goth, Bullshit Detector are definitely worth checking out.
Built for War is available digitally via Bandcamp and also on CD.
