Brazilian Darkness from São Paulo: Autoexílio Releases Debut EP

If you have a soft spot for raw post-punk with a hint of South American melancholy, look no further than São Paulo. The new formation Autoexílio has just unleashed its self-titled debut EP. Recorded at Estúdio Dissonância Magnética, this five-track release captures the very essence of the genre: driving basslines, punchy drums, haunting lyrics, and the compelling bonus of female vocals that command attention.

Autoexílio pulls no punches, opening with „Detentores de Poder,“ where they take aim at institutional corruption and religious hypocrisy. From there, the record dives into much deeper, introspective waters. In tracks like „Memórias“ and „A Cada Passo,“ the band explores the fleeting nature of time and the sense of futility in a modern world that gradually consumes the individual.

The title track, „Autoexilados,“ defines the band’s core philosophy—a sense of paralysis between the old and the new, where one survives only within the shelter of unfulfilled dreams. The closing track, „Entreato,“ leaves the listener in a state of total emotional numbness, a place where the air has no taste and the world’s contours finally blur into nothingness.

The band also paid close attention to the visual aesthetic. The cover art is no digital rush job; it is a genuine woodcut (xilogravura) by artist Fábio Calaza, perfectly complementing the raw nature of the recording. Production and mixing were handled by Dennis Monteiro, who successfully captured a gritty, urgent sound that feels both classic and fresh.

If you’re looking for the perfect soundtrack for wandering through the concrete jungle at night, Autoexílio is an essential choice.
