From Porto Alegre, Brazil, Betume arrive with their debut EP Gulag, released on October 7, 2026. The trio builds a dark post-punk atmosphere, resulting in a cold and claustrophobic release that definitely won’t pull you out of depression. Quite the opposite. These three tracks draw you into a world where the past refuses to let go, the same mistakes keep repeating, and there’s no way out because the prison is inside your own head.
The opening track “O Tempo Destrói Tudo” (Time Destroys Everything) deals with personal failures, loneliness and scars that never seem to heal. How many times can you fall before you give up? And how much of what you’ve been through can time really erase?
“Guaíba” continues in the same hopeless vein. A vicious cycle, the repetition of the same mistakes, and ghosts of the past reminding us that some things will never be the same again.
The closing title track “Gulag” takes this personal despair to a broader social level. Big Brother watches every thought, censorship seeps into people’s consciences and forces them into silence. Every heart is like a gulag in Siberia. The lyrics paint a picture of a world obsessed with order and obedience, where everyone builds their own personal gulag. A world where the main goal is to never step out of line.
Musically, Betume rely on icy guitar riffs. The sound is detached, cold and, at times, downright suffocating. There’s nothing here to offer the listener relief or the promise of better days ahead. Political pessimism meets personal despair, creating an atmosphere in which you slowly come to terms with the possibility that there may be no way out at all.
Gulag is a short but striking release for those moments when you have no desire to look for light at the end of the tunnel. Betume aren’t offering any. All that’s left is the cold and the feeling that there’s no escaping this prison.
