Various Artists – Apokalypse Deutschland LP

LABEL: Try And Stop Me Records
YEAR: 2025

The compilation of German Oi!punk bands was released by the Try And Stop Me label in 2025. It features a total of 13 tracks by six bands, offering a solid serving of music for fans of short-haired rock’n’roll. The artwork clearly references the legendary compilation Chaos En France, making its direction obvious at first glance.‘

First up are Boigrup, a more punk-oriented band from Quedlinburg. They’ve been active since 1996, although they took a longer break between 2004 and 2020. The opening track Vom Glück, Zu Sterben is a fast-paced punk crusher, followed by Führer, a cover of Daily Terror and probably the slowest song on the entire compilation.

Next come Still Defiant, which for me are practically a guarantee of quality. Their tracks Flying Chairs and Standing Straight are sung in English. Their characteristic blend of Oi! and rock’n’roll is energetic, lively, and packed with hit potential—and that’s exactly the case here as well.

Third on the tape is the project Ihle. Based on what I’ve found, it seems to be a side project of members of Anti Clockwise, although I don’t know the exact details of this connection. Musically, it’s a mix of Oi! and punk, with No Future Ist Jetzt and Krieg Der Knöpfe leaning more toward a punk sound (especially the former). The vocal delivery fits the overall vibe perfectly.

Side B opens with Sewerheads from Dresden. The first track is listed as Class Of ’97 in the tracklist, but in the lyrics sheet it appears as Fuck The Rest. The latter title better reflects the lyrical content, and this Chiswick-scented tune is one of the highlights of the record. The same goes for their second track, Cancel Culture, which deals with the topic of labeling within the scene. Both songs are sung in English.

Next up are Anti Clockwise with their fairly distinctive and slightly more melodic take on Oi!punk. They contribute Hamsterrad and Nicht Mein Bier. These tracks were reportedly recorded back in 2007 and 2013, finally seeing an official release here.

Last but not least come Zinnober, a band I previously knew nothing about. Out of all the bands on the compilation, they probably have the strongest rock’n’roll influence in their sound, even though they still remain firmly rooted in Oi!punk. They contribute three tracks, all of which I enjoy, with Neuer Tag, Neues Gefecht being my personal favorite. For me, they’re the most interesting project on the compilation—even though the lyrics are in German, which I don’t fully master. If I understand the text in the included mini-zine correctly, this project brings together musicians from four of the participating bands to record these songs collectively. Anyone fluent in German can dig deeper into the details there.

Overall, this is a strong compilation of more underground bands that operate somewhat outside the main spotlight and follow their own path. Musically, the quality is consistent throughout, and no band feels like filler. Each contributes at least two solid tracks (Zinnober even three), which makes for a cohesive and meaningful record. A nice bonus is the included mini-zine featuring all the lyrics.

A solid release from the Try And Stop Me label, already out in its second repress.
