Občas mě tu při poslechu napadají možné inspirace u některých songů. Například píseň „System“ mi okamžitě evokovala moje oblíbené holandské Close Combat, hlavně způsobem, jakým se refrén organicky napojuje na sloky. Zpěvná „Bomber Rules O.K.“ zase připomene Evil Conduct z období alba King Of Kings (2007). Právě tyto dva songy pro mě z celé desky vyčnívají a nejvíce si je užívám.

Texty nepřekvapí, ale to není na škodu – drží se osvědčených témat, která k žánru neodmyslitelně patří. „Wasn’t Me“ se zabývá stigmatem skinheadské identity, „System“ vyjadřuje odpor k autoritám a společenským pořádkům, „Hard Working Man“ líčí každodenní dřinu dělnické třídy, „Choose Your Fate“ zdůrazňuje jednotu mezi skinheads a punks, „The Jungle“ se dotýká problémového dospívání a „Bomber Rules O.K.“ je otevřenou oslavou subkulturního života. Vše podané přímočaře, s důrazem na refrény, které si snadno zapamatujete.

Celkově jde o velmi solidní debut, který potěší hlavně fanoušky punkovější polohy Oi! soundu – tedy syrovější, přímější podoby, která není přezdobená a staví na síle kolektivního zpěvu a jednoduchých melodiích. Vinyl obsahuje všechny texty a také poděkování.

Bomber se s tímhle EP zařadili mezi kapely, které ctí tradici a zároveň dokazují, že i v roce 2025 můžeš hrát Oi! postavené na základech starých bootboy klasik a neznít sentimentálně. Není to nic revolučního, ale jako poctivá dávka pouličního rock’n’rollu to funguje

This mini album, or rather maxi EP, was released in the US under Longshot Records and in Europe through TASTM. Bomber hail from Los Angeles and, according to the booklet, the band is made up of musicians who have been active in the punk, Oi! and rock’n’roll scene since the 1990s. From what I found, it should be former members of bands like Toughskins, The Choice, Bovver Wonderland, or The Generators. The record comes out on a full twelve-inch vinyl and features six tracks that capture the atmosphere of classic Oi! bands from the late ’80s and early ’90s – most notably The Oppressed or The Business. Mid-tempo pace, strong vocals, gang choruses and straightforward yet punchy song structures – pure bootboy classic in the best sense of the word.

Every now and then, certain influences come to mind while listening. For instance, the track „System“ immediately reminded me of my Dutch favorites Close Combat, especially in the way the chorus flows so naturally from the verses. The anthemic „Bomber Rules O.K.“ in turn brings back memories of Evil Conduct during their King Of Kings (2007) era. These two songs stand out for me as the highlights of the whole record.

Lyrically, there are no big surprises, but that’s not a drawback – the band sticks to the tried-and-true themes that belong to the genre. „Wasn’t Me“ deals with the stigma of skinhead identity, „System“ expresses resistance to authority and social order, „Hard Working Man“ depicts the everyday struggle of the working class, „Choose Your Fate“ emphasizes unity between skinheads and punks, „The Jungle“ addresses the hardships of growing up, and „Bomber Rules O.K.“ is an open celebration of subcultural life. Everything is delivered in a direct, no-frills manner, with a focus on choruses that get stuck in your head after the first listen.

Overall, this is a very solid debut that will especially please fans of the punkier side of Oi! – the rawer, more straightforward sound that avoids unnecessary embellishments and thrives on the power of group vocals and simple, catchy melodies. The vinyl also includes all the lyrics and a thank-you list, which is always a nice touch.

With this EP, Bomber place themselves among the bands that honor tradition while proving that even in 2025 you can still play Oi! rooted in the foundations of the old bootboy classics without sounding nostalgic. It’s nothing revolutionary, but as an honest dose of street rock’n’roll, it works perfectly.

Na první poslech jsem si nebyl úplně jistý, co si o desce myslet. Chvíli mi trvalo se do ní dostat – ale o to víc mě pak chytla. Nakonec se z ní stala nahrávka, která na mém gramofonu tráví víc času, než jsem původně čekal.

Hudebně bych řekl, že je to kombinace dřevního Oi! alá Last Resort nebo Oxblood, ale slyšíš tu i dotek punku 82 a sem tam i chytlavější pasáže. Celkový dojem je ale spíš strohý, syrový – bez zbytečných okras, což platí nejen pro muziku, ale i pro vokál. Celou desku táhne jeden zpěvák, což dává výsledku jednotný a trochu uzavřený charakter. Možná právě kvůli tomu to chce víc poslechů – není to hitparáda na první dobrou, ale spíš nenápadná nahrávka, která ti časem zaleze pod kůži.

Textově se kapela drží klasických skinheadských témat: internetoví pozéři (Online Persona), každodenní boj o přežití (Laugh Now Cry Later, Next Generation), skinheadský životní styl (Gather Up the Boys, Bar Crawl), frustrace v osobním životě (Skinhead Blues, Personal Hell) i přátelství (Friendship Song). Celkově má většina songů dost melancholický nádech.

Pokud tě to na první poslech úplně nechytne, doporučuju to nevzdat. Není to žádná převratná a nafintěná deska na první poslech, ale poctivý i když strohý skinhead sound.

On the first listen, I wasn’t sure what to make of it. It took me a couple of spins to really get into it – but once it clicked, it stuck. It’s become one of those records that spends more time on my turntable than I expected.

Musically, I’d describe it as a blend of raw, old-school Oi! in the vein of Last Resort or Oxblood, with touches of punk ’82 and the occasional catchy passage. But the overall vibe stays rough and stripped-down – no frills, both in the music and vocals. The whole record is carried by a single singer, which gives it a cohesive but slightly closed-off feel. That’s probably why it takes a few listens to really sink in – it’s not a hit machine on first spin, but a record that slowly gets under your skin.

Lyrically, it sticks to classic skinhead themes: internet posers (Online Persona), daily survival (Laugh Now Cry Later, Next Generation), the skinhead lifestyle (Gather Up the Boys, Bar Crawl), personal frustration (Skinhead Blues, Personal Hell), and friendship (Friendship Song). Most of the songs carry a pretty melancholic tone throughout.

If it doesn’t grab you right away, give it time. This isn’t some polished, radio-friendly singalong – it’s honest, no-frills skinhead sound.
