Slugger emerged from California and belong to the new generation of Oi! bands that has been pushing its way to the forefront in recent years with massive energy. When I tried to dig up more information about the band online, I found mentions that some of the members previously played in hardcore bands. That actually makes perfect sense—Slugger represent a classic brickwall Oi! sound, an approach to Oi! that isn’t afraid to flirt with hardcore influences. And that’s something certain American bands do extremely well.
This three-piece delivers a driving sound full of aggression, tight riffs, and perfectly timed singalongs. It’s exactly the kind of music that can turn the front rows of a club into a small battlefield within seconds. At the same time, it’s the sort of record that makes me scream along in the car with the stereo turned up to maximum, trying to outshout the choruses.
The album was released at the end of 2024, but lately I’ve been trying to catch up on reviewing records that I consider truly essential. And this one definitely belongs in that category. In fact, I’d say it’s one of the most important Oi! releases of the past few years.
The record contains twelve songs recorded in the classic setup—guitar, bass, drums, and vocals – exactly the way hard street rock’n’roll should sound. What I love most about this album is the guitar work. It’s razor-sharp and precise, cutting through the rhythm while pushing the songs forward. Of course, it’s not just about the guitar—the entire band plays like a perfectly tuned machine.
Another huge strength of the record is the consistency. The band manages to keep the energy and quality at a very high level throughout the entire album. There are no filler tracks and no weak moments. The record moves between songs that emphasize a raw sound and football-style chants, such as Chopping Block, and tracks that lean more toward hardcore territory, like Under The Boot.
New Generation is an absolute anthem. It opens the album and clearly announces where the band stands—proud carriers of the torch of street rock’n’roll for a new generation. Slugger’s music generally moves within a hard and fast Oi! style. If you mix Rixe, Violent Way, Mess, and harder bands like The Enforcers or Street Code, you’ll get a pretty good idea of what Slugger sound like.
A track like Dead State is stylistically very close to the latter two bands. The group also openly aligns itself with the harder side of the Oi! spectrum through their cover of You’re A Rebel by Iron Cross, which fits naturally into the album’s overall atmosphere.
Lyrically, Slugger often—almost exclusively—focus on working-class themes, frustration with everyday life, and the feeling of being alienated from modern society. If the term real punk was once used to separate bands that use punk merely as a fun aesthetic from those for whom punk is a true outlet for anger and frustration, then Slugger are absolutely that kind of band.
The result is a damn strong record from one of the leading bands of the current Oi! generation. An album that has everything it takes to become a modern street rock’n’roll classic.
