Rage & Ruin – Rage & Ruin LP

LABEL: Lionheart Records
YEAR: 2024
Rage & Ruin are an Oi! band from Philadelphia and appear to be a continuation of the hardcore/Oi! project Please Die!, with some members involved in both bands. Please Die! released four records, all through Lionheart Records, so the connection between the two projects is fairly obvious. Likewise, the debut release from Rage & Ruin came out in 2024 on the same label. Compared to Please Die!, however, this new band is noticeably less hardcore-oriented and much more firmly rooted in Oi! punk. Musically, I would compare them to bands such as Burden. The record comes with all the lyrics and some well-executed artwork, which is always a bonus.

Rage & Ruin showcase a very solid level of musicianship throughout the record. The full and aggressive sound of the twin guitars constantly drives the songs forward, while the gritty vocal delivery fits the overall atmosphere perfectly. The opening title track, Rage & Ruin, is a bootboy/glam rock-influenced stomper that immediately demonstrates the energy this band brings to the table. It is followed by the excellent Criminal Action, a song that grabbed me from the very first listen and was one of the main reasons I started looking for this record and eventually added it to my collection. Dead And Gone serves as a perfect example of the style the band presents on this release. America Fuck Yeah features a stronger melodic edge and is without question one of the standout tracks on the entire record.

Side B contains four original songs and one cover version. USA Hitmen is built primarily around the singer’s commanding vocal performance, while the tightly played guitars provide a solid backbone for the song. The same approach continues in Ides Of March. Berserker makes a powerful entrance and, with its energy and aggression, leans slightly closer to hardcore territory. For me personally, There Will Be Blood is the strongest track on the second side of the vinyl.

Lyrically, Rage & Ruin fully live up to their name. This is music fueled by anger, frustration, and confrontation. The songs revolve around violence, struggle, conflict, fragments of politics, and the darker sides of the world around us. The band avoids complicated metaphors and philosophical reflections, instead relying on a direct and intense approach that perfectly suits this style of music. To close the record, they also deliver an excellent cover of Wish The Lads Were Here by Red London.

I have the feeling that this release passed through the scene a little more quietly than it deserved. That’s one of the reasons why I’m writing about it. It would be a shame if it got lost among the endless stream of new releases. Rage & Ruin deliver honest, aggressive, and well-played Oi! punk with a powerful sound, strong songwriting, and plenty of their own ideas. If this band has somehow slipped under your radar, they are definitely worth checking out.
