PHR is releasing a reissue of the album Konec světa by Šanov I.

Released on the Papagájův Hlasatel Records (PHR) label, this is a reissue of the cult punk album by the Teplice-based band Šanov I. titled Konec světa.

The record is available on vinyl, CD, and cassette. Compared to the original 1990 release, this edition includes expanded liner notes, Czech lyrics, and their English translations.

So why should you care about this reissue? Czechoslovakia was part of the Eastern Bloc, where unofficial culture was under constant surveillance by the state. Being a punk in totalitarian Czechoslovakia wasn’t about fun—it meant open defiance of the system, rejection of socialist norms, and exposure to the very real risk of persecution that inevitably followed.

Records by foreign punk bands were considered illegal, so local punks drew inspiration from wherever they could—limited contacts with the West, tuning into foreign radio and TV broadcasts (where possible), or importing records from relatively more liberal socialist countries like Yugoslavia, Hungary, or Poland. All this took place under one of the most rigid communist gerontocracies in the entire Eastern Bloc.

On Konec světa, you can hear what authentic punk sounded like in a totalitarian reality—raw, unpolished, and driven by pure protest. A sound shaped in part by fragments of hardcore punk influences that managed to seep into the country despite the barriers.

This combination of resistance, limitations, and inner pressure gives the recording a unique intensity. It stands as one of the most compelling and undoubtedly essential punk documents from the former Eastern Bloc—a snapshot of a time when punk was a genuine act of protest, not just a mindless form of entertainment.
