I discovered a new post-punk specter from Barcelona called Perifèria Nord. It is perfectly played post-punk with female vocals. Both of their recordings are based on literary motifs, which is a very interesting and unusual matter for me, and it really captured my attention.
The first EP from November 2023 leans on Poe’s „The Masque of the Red Death“ – everything in the lyrics revolves around futility, decay, and the inevitable end, which perfectly suits this musical style. These are images of bodies disappearing, celebrations turning into delirium, and death passing even through the wall when you try to escape it.
The second recording from June this year moves the band even deeper into weirdness. The inspiration is „The King in Yellow“ by Robert W. Chambers, a cult weird and wondrous classic where a mysterious play corrodes reality, and the yellow color signifies madness. The EP’s lyrics deal with the soul, destiny, loss of identity, and roads that lead nowhere. It’s not horror – it’s more of a feeling that the world has a hidden layer you were not supposed to know about.
The result? Cold, atmospheric post-punk that builds on literary despair but doesn’t sound pretentious. It’s more like a nocturnal wandering through an empty city, where somewhere between the lights, both Poe and Chambers flicker in one dirty, dark vision. If you are even slightly interested in this musical direction, give it a try; I think both EPs are absolutely brilliant.
