Boston Hardcore – all day, every day! A burst of fresh blood on the U.S. hardcore scene, kicking hard in every direction. This is the kind of hardcore I’m into – tempo shifts, builds from groovy, head-nodding parts into crushing blasts of sound, and a fast, clipped vocal right up front. Stylistically, it leans much closer to punk than to anything metal-flavored. Perfect.
Ten tracks in about twenty minutes – that’s all I need. And live? I wouldn’t want much more time in the pit either. A forty-minute set is ideal here: just enough to catch your breath between songs, tie your laces, count your broken bones, and track down your missing teeth… before throwing yourself straight back into the crowd for the next hit.
Fans of Sheer Terror, Madball, Slapshot or Blood For Blood will eat this up. With the latter, I’d add that Haywire use similar methods – just stripped of melodic touches in choruses and transitions. The driving force behind the project is Austin Sparkman (seen in Buried Dream, Death Before Dishonor, Conservative Military Image), joined in the booklet by Chris Cesarini (also Conservative Military Image, Street Power, Mental Warfare). The record also features contributions from members of The Chisel and Restraining Order. Lyrically, it’s pure venting of aggression and frustration – perfectly in sync with the music.
Haywire have blasted out of the gate like a rocket, and in autumn 2025 they’ll be hitting Europe for a big tour with Dropkick Murphys. I’m curious to see how their set translates to large venues and how they’ll connect with European crowds. For me, the hardcore Haywire play feels most at home in small clubs, where the audience becomes a living part of the show and pushes the whole experience to another level. From the videos I’ve seen on their site, they’ve got that dynamic down – and that’s exactly the kind of energy I love about hardcore. One of the strongest projects on the scene right now.
