Bemnoz – Brest is alive!

A fresh band, Bemnoz, is coming from Brest, Brittany. I actually first heard them on the city compilation QUELQUES COUPS D’ÉCLAT, which was released a week ago and we also wrote about it (and there are really more gems there).

This port corner of France has the roughness of the ocean and military history in it – and that’s exactly what can be heard on their first album of the same name, which was released at the end of August on Bandcamp. The seven songs (S.N.L.E, Nouvelle Ville, Demain Victorieux…) walk the edge between raw punk and darker post-punk. The bass pushes, the guitars draw a dirty atmosphere and the French vocals add urgency and authenticity. The lyrics revolve around Brest – from references to the submarine base (S.N.L.E) to the local neighborhoods (Clermont-Tonnerre). Bemnoz sounds like you’re wandering around the harbor at night with a stale beer in your hand: a bit of melancholy, but still the strength and energy to show someone the middle finger.

If you like darker, honest punk with a French character, this is for you. Brest is alive and Bemnoz is proof of that.
