British indie scene in our fanzine? It sounds weird, but sometimes a band we usually ignore hits the nail on the head. Babyshambles, the crew fronted by eternal rebel Pete Doherty, have returned after more than a decade with a new single, and… it’s a ska/reggae banger!
The track is called „Dandy Hooligan“ and carries that perfect, old-school, slightly gritty rhythm you’d expect more from bands like The Aggrolites or maybe The Clash. It’s neither Oi! nor punk, but that lyric and, most importantly, the vibe…
He robs from the rich gives to his wardrobe. You know he never punch down.
The lyric is about a well-dressed hooligan who loves a good punch-up, takes care of his wardrobe, and follows the honorable code that „he never punches down.“ This theme, combining subcultural style with street ethics, is simply spot-on.
Forget the indie roots and give this new offering from Babyshambles another listen. It’s roguish and hits the right ska/reggae note. It might surprise you.
Check out „Dandy Hooligan“ – it’s a great anthem for everyone who has style and isn’t afraid of a good fight.
